The Biggest Data Breaches of 2019 So Far

blog-lisitng-img

When it comes to data breaches, 2019 has already seen more than its fair share. Coming off the heels of a particularly bad year for major data breaches, everyone from medical companies to financial firms, retailers and social media have been affected so far. This year, millions of consumer accounts have been compromised through the work of hackers or even plain carelessness. However, the number of hacked accounts does not always matter. For instance, one breach may affect a million users but the data could be rather generic, whereas a smaller breach could include highly sensitive information.

This year, ransomware continues to be an ever-growing threat. Fortunately, looking for new trends and patterns in data breaches can help educate both consumers and businesses about the value of protecting private information. In the first half of 2019, there have been over 10 significant breaches with 11 of them affecting medical or healthcare organizations. Therefore, not only do security breaches account for millions of dollars in lost revenue but they can also put innocent lives at risk.

Read below to learn more about the largest security breaches of 2019.

Five of the Largest Data Breaches in 2019

  1. Facebook: So far, there have been a few Facebook breaches but the largest one came in April. Millions of users on Facebook woke up to discover that their personal records were exposed on Amazon servers. These files were configured to allow open access to anyone.
  2. Capital One: Approximately 100 million customers were affected by the Capital One data breach in July. According to the company, a non-employee accessed personal information related to customers who used credit cards and others who applied for Capital One products.
  3. First American Corporation: One of the biggest data breaches of this year is the hack of First American Corporation. The American real estate title insurer’s website was hacked and resulted in the exposure of millions of mortgage deal documents including bank details, social security numbers, tax records and more. These records were able to be viewed without authentication requirements.
  4. Toyota: There was high cybercriminal activity in the month of April. Similar to Facebook and Capital One, Toyota announced that hackers seized the company’s servers. Information from 3.1 million Toyota and Lexus customers was stolen, although the company did not know the specifics of what was taken. Fortunately, personal information such as financial details were not on these hacked servers.
  5. American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA): The AMCA data breach of 2019 affected three of their major clients including Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Lab Corp and Quest Diagnostics. The breach was not detected until eight months later when it was discovered that millions of patient records were exposed.
